For many years I have loved the images from the Temple of Zeus and Athena at Pergamon.  It is Hellenistic, a period when Greek art was full of detailed realism, emotion, and often ugliness. The Temple is distinguished by a huge, deeply carved frieze depicting the gigantomachy, the fight between the Olympian gods and savage giants.  It is the original Marvel comic: rows of stories depicting cool, self-controlled superheroes defeating snarling, agonized villains.   I am privileged to have visited the temple in Berlin where it was brought from its original site in Turkey.
