Studio Bootsie
MISSION STATEMENT
Years ago I heard a man on a panel of curators at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art answer an audience member’s question, “How do you decide what to show?” by saying “I show what my friends are talking about.” The other panelists panicked a little and tried to walk back his statement but he was being perfectly honest. For over a hundred years, from Duchamp’s “Fountain” to Cattelan’s “Comedian,” a work of art has been defined by the notice of an elite group of people and how they talk about it.
Studio Bootsie challenges the limitations of who gets to say what is and isn’t art. We revitalize the old notion of art for art’s sake by showing the art of people whose work is made solely for their own satisfaction and personal growth. While rejecting the sentimental idea that all art is equally good Studio Bootsie understands that all good art is made from love and a search for truth.
There are many people who do this with little thought of recognition. Yet it is the very nature of art to be seen. Our studio embraces as radical the mission of noticing art that nobody notices. By sharing this work with the community, Studio Bootsie proves that art has the strength to carry on for itself without expectation of attention or reward.
