THE WAY OF A WOMAN

This series was inspired by mid-20th-century Hollywood Bible epics and the way they depict hyperbolized versions of the masculine and the feminine.  The series gets its name from a line delivered by Gina Lollobrigida in the movie, Solomon and Sheba: “The way of a woman is simple; it is always to follow the way of a man.”  That sentence can be interpreted in different ways, but it encapsulates the confusion of traditional gender roles and the illusiveness of pathways to power.  Lush colors and static distortions point to the highly mediated nature of these gendered narratives.  The series was shown at ARC Gallery in 2008, and single pieces have been shown in group shows.
